- Italy Day 5
A nice hike/climb on my last full day in the Dolomites (Dad will be here for another week). Our guide on Day 3 recommended this route as it is quite new and not on all of the maps.
#5 Lagazuoi - 1st class with a bit of 2nd class and easy 3rd class and a bunch of exposure - 2762m - 657m gain. Mostly a trail, but quite fun. Cabled in spots that are 2nd class or above and have exposure, but no need to clip in. A fair amount of class 1 hiking with exposure, but on a very well engineered trail and much better than on Day 4.
On the way down, we hiked through an old Italian WWI mine tunnel for more than 1000ft of vertical. Evidently, the Italians built it in order to sneak up underneath the Austrian positions on top of the mountain and blow them up. It largely worked, even though the Italians basically lost the Austrian front in Tyrol during the war and only ended up with this land because the allies won on the Western Front (and honored their earlier commitment, in violation of Wilson's fight for self-determination).
- Italy Day 4
A rest day, though it didn't quite start out that way. We had intended to hike up to Mount Cavallo, which was supposed to be a somewhat easy climb. However, after Dad forgot some of his gear and had to go back, I turned around relatively early due to some exposure that I wasn't quite comfortable with alone, even if the route was technically easy.
We took advantage of the rest of the day by driving down towards Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites, and exploring a bit around the base of the glacier.
- Tridentina
A few photos taken by the guide during our climb on the Tridentina Via Ferrata.
- Italy Day 3
The big day!
#4 Tridentina - 5.6A0 - 2585m - 750m gain (400m+ on cable)
This climb is widely considered to be one of the best Via Ferrata in the Dolomites. It is long, sustained, and has quite a bit of exposure. The cable is in great condition, though, so it is all quite safe. Probably 50% of the route, assuming you are using the cable as a hand-hold, is 3rd class or 4th class. Another 40% or so is low 5th class and 10% or so is in the 5.5 or 5.6 range.
The route is broken up into 3 sections. A short pitch very early that takes you from the road up to a shelf. This is mostly ladders, but has some good exposure. There is then a hike along the shelf for 10-15 minutes over to the waterfall before the next section.
The second section takes you up the side of the waterfall until the base of the pinnacle itself. This is mostly 4th class with the cable, but it is quite long and there are some fun traverses with several hundred feet of air.
The last section takes you up the pinnacle. This is close to vertical and, even though there are ladders for a lot of it, the difficultly goes up. Some awkward moves going on and off the ladders and the handholds/footholds get a bit smaller.
At the top of the pinnacle, there is a bridge over to the plateau, a short easy Ferrata pitch, and then a 10 minute walk over to the Refuge/Hut where you can grab some lunch.
- Italy Day 2
Today we drove over towards Cortina and climbed one peak. On the way down, we explored some of the World War I history in the area.
#3 Averau - 5.6/5.4A0 - 2659m - 390m gain. A fun short section of 5th class with a good cable and then some 3rd class to the summit.
(more pictures to come)
- Italy Day 1
Two peak climbs on a great first day:
#1: Piz da Cir V - 5.5/5.4A0 - 2520m - 450m gain. A mostly 2nd class scree chute, followed by a great intro to Via Ferrata. A low 5th class slope that was an easy intro to clipping into and out of the cable.
#2: Gran Cir - easy 3rd class - 2592m - 450m gain. A fun Sierra style peak climb. A few sections were protected by cable, but it wasn't necessary to clip in.
- North Carolina
Some pictures from a quick trip to North Carolina on business. I went a day early and had some time to explore around Duke and the area.
- Death Valley
- Yosemite Snow
Helen, Ryan (visiting from Taiwan), and I took a quick weekend trip to Yosemite for some skiing and snowshoeing. Lots of snow, lots of water, and some good weather!
- Sonoma Bike Trip
I took advantage of the President's Day Weekend to bike up to Sonoma County and back, with the help of Caltrain and a bus trip from San Rafael to Santa Rosa.
About 20 miles of biking on Saturday, in the rain. About 65 miles on Sunday, while doing some wine tasting. 75 miles on Monday for the ride back to SF.
- Royal Gorge
Dad, Ana, and I went over to Royal Gorge for a day of x-country skiing while Kathi, Kevin, Mira, and Tessa were playing in the kids park at Soda Springs.
- Peter Grubb Hut
A day trip by snowshoe up to one of the Sierra Club huts near Lake Tahoe.
- Shanghai Skyline
- Mt. Tallac
- Half Dome - Rebecca
12 years ago on Aug 28th, 1998, my Dad and Rebecca were married on top of Half Dome. On Aug 28th, 2010, we went back to Half Dome to pay our respects to Rebecca and to fulfill the request she made in her final days to have some of her ashes scattered on this wonderful spot.
Thank you, Rebecca, for everything and thanks to everybody who came up to Yosemite.
- Shei Pa National Park
Since my flight doesn't leave until Sunday, I had a free day in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Bor-Chin Wang and his family took me on a drive up to Shei Pa National Park at about 6000ft (2000m) . We took a short hike and ended up getting caught in a torrential downpour without any raingear. Fortunately it wasn't too cold and we had a great time.
- Ten Lakes Backpack
- Frankfurt to Chennai
The route from Frankfurt to Chennai flies over Germany, the Czech
Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Black Sea, Georgia, the Caspian Sea, Iran, Pakistan, and then India. I took a couple pictures out the window with my iPhone.
- Orlando
Some pictures from a trip to visit Mark, Kim, and Kerstin Heinrich in Celebration, Florida.
- Tracy Bullfight
The Portuguese community in the central valley holds (bloodless) bullfights throughout the summer. This is the first time I've been to the one in Tracy.
- Yosemite Falls and Sierra Point
- Grand Canyon - Days 2, 3, and 4
Day 2 was our rest day down at the river. However, instead of resting, we took a 12-mile (round trip) hike up Bright Angel Creek to Ribbon Falls. We weren't really sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a great hike and a really cool waterfall. On the 3rd day we hiked up to our campsite at Indian Gardens in the morning and then took a day hike out to Plateau Point in the afternoon. We then climbed the rest of the way up the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim on Day 4.
(The battery in my camera ran out at the end of Day 2. The Day 3 and Day 4 pictures were taken using Helen's Canon Powershot, which she was nice enough to let me borrow.)
- Grand Canyon - Day 1
We started our backpack by heading down the South Kiabab trail from the South Rim down to the river. While it was a bit crowded at the top, it really is one of the best trails in the world.
- Spring Trip to Tahoe
A great Sierra spring weekend, skiing Squaw on Saturday and biking around north shore on Sunday.
- Sugar Bowl
had a great day skiing with Helen, Ryan, and Penny.
- Day 21 - Den Haag to Amsterdam
A great way to end the trip! Instead of the forecast rain, I got a nice sunny day for the fast ride along the canals from Den Haag (The Hague) to Amsterdam.
- Day 20 - Dordrecht to North Sea to Den Haag
I made it! A very wet day from Dordrecht, through Rotterdam, to Hook of Holland and the North Sea, and then on to Den Haag (The Hague).
- Day 19 - Nijmegen to Dordrecht
An 82-mile day along the Waal River.
- Nijmegen
Some pictures from my rest day in Nijmegen, including a short side trip by train to Arnhem for dinner.
- Day 17 - Wesel to Nijmegen
A stop at the roman ruins in Xanten and then across the border into the Netherlands, ending up in Nijmegen.
- Day 16 - Dusseldorf to Wesel
Leaving the Rhineland and heading towards the Netherlands...
- Day 15 - Bonn to Dusseldorf
A ride through the heart of the Rhineland, with a stop at Cologne to see the famous cathedral.
- Day 14 - Koblenz to Bonn
A transition day from the Rhine Gorge near Koblenz to the Rhineland city of Bonn. I didn't know what to expect for this day and I was pleasantly surprised. The great weather definitely helped.
- Day 13 - Bacharach to Koblenz
The second half of the Romantic Rhine. Amazingly, I took even more pictures than I did for the first half.
This is a an album for the Slideshow. Click the button, lean back, and enjoy the Rhine. (These are still the small size images, though. The full size ones won't be uploaded until I get home.)
- Day 12 - Mainz to Bacharach
The start of the Romantic Rhine. A bit of rain early in the day, but the sun started peaking through for the interesting stuff later.
- Day 11 - Mannheim to Mainz
A great day along the Rhine, with a stop at Worms along the way.
- Day 10 - Karlsruhe to Mannheim
A cold day along the Rhine from Karlshruhe up to Speyer and then on to Mannheim.
- Day 9 - Strasbourg to Karlsruhe
Back along the Rhine for a cold, but not wet, day to Karlsruhe.
- Paris
I took a day off from the bike trip and snuck over to Paris on the TGV. It turned out my Uncle was visiting Europe as well and he had a free day in Paris on the same day I was in Strasbourg, a TGV stop. Since I'd never been to Paris, it seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass up.
I left Strasbourg on the 6:45am train, met my Uncle at his hotel, went to the Louvre, Notre Dame, and the Arc de Triumph, and came back on the 7:24pm train, getting back into Strasbourg at 9:35pm.
- Day 7 - Colmar to Strasbourg
A ride on the Alsace Wine Route.
- Colmar
Colmar is one of the main cities of Alsace and a major tourist destination within France. The Unterlinden Museum is the best attended French Museum outside of Paris and renowned for its religious works from the late middle ages. The town itself has a well-preserved pedestrian only old town area, as well as a section with a few small canals known as Little Venice. It is definitely a tourist trap, but there is enough history and character that it is still an interesting and fun stop.
- Day 6 - Basel to Colmar
I took a slight detour away from the Rhine (really a canal in this area) and stopped in the French city of Colmar. It rained a good section of the morning, but I still made good time and got into Colmar shortly after 2pm.
- Basel
I took a rest day in Basel to dry up and took advantage of the opportunity to look around. It was a bit cloudy, but that didn't stop me.
- Day 4 - Brugg to Basel
On the Rhine! A long day with a fair amount of rain, but still some pretty nice views. I'll be taking a rest day in Basel to dry out and plan the next stage of the trip.
- Day 3 - Solothurn to Brugg
A relaxing day along the river.
- Solothurn
I was very surprised by this town (and the cathedral). If you are ever in Switzerland, it is worth a look. St. Urs Cathedral is not what you would expect in Switzerland.
- Day 2 - Bern to Solothurn
This was a good long day. The twists and turns of the Aare near Bern were a lot of fun. It was slow going, though, and, even though the later part of the day was faster, I still didn't get into Solothurn until after 7pm.
- Bern
I arrived in Bern at around 5:30pm, but didn't go out with my good camera that evening. In the morning, I took advantage of the time needed to charge my GPS to wander around the city.
- Day 1 - Wengen to Bern
A great first day!
- Wengen Day 3
On my last day in Wengen before my trip, we went on a great hike up underneath the Eiger Glacier.
- Wengen Day 2
A clear day. It would have been a great day for hiking, but we used it to clear all of our tasks. First, we mailed my bike box to Amsterdam. Second, we went down to Interlaken to buy a portable hard disk I can use for backup (I left mine back in the states). We then took a quick ride around Lake Thun, scouting out the bike paths. Along the way, we stopped in Thun for a coffee and to look around at the river.
- Wengen
- Tahoe Sierra Century
A bunch of current and former Atheros folks got together at a cabin near Squaw (thanks Anna!) and rode in the Tahoe Sierra Century. I just rode 64 miles, but several folks in the group did 80, 90, or 100 miles.
- New Mexico
- Bike Packing
- Sacramento Levees
In order to train for my trip to Europe, I decided to bike from Pittsburg, the far far end of BART, to Sacramento. The trip would take me on a winding route along the Sacramento River levees. I could then spend the night in Sacramento and take the Capitol train home the next day.
Worked out great, though I didn't count on the weather being close to (or over) 100 degrees.
- San Jose Fire Stations
I've started a somewhat quixotic quest to bike to all 34 of the San Jose Fire Stations. Figured it would be good way both to get some miles on the saddle and learn about my new home town.
I found a non-optimal Traveling Salesman route to all 34 of about 105 miles. Might try that as a training ride at some point, but for now I'm content with doing a few at a time.:-)
Visited all 34! 1-31 and 33-35. 32 was closed down at some point.
- Fireworks
Some neighbors on the street behind my house had some pretty impressive illegal fireworks (rockets launched more than 100ft high). Pictures taken from inside my home office looking out the window.
- Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne
Pictures from a 3-day Sierra Club backpacking trip up the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite.
- Vernel/Nevada Falls
Bryan Burns, Ryan Hsu, Helen and I went on a quick trip up to Yosemite to climb the Vernal/Nevada Falls Trail.
- Confirmation
- Sierra Point
About 20 years ago, Yosemite closed the short (but steep) trail up to Sierra Point. Since then, the trail has become a bit overgrown, but is otherwise in good shape. I went on the trail once with my Dad before it was closed and again about 10 years ago with my Dad after it had been abandoned. My Dad does the trail all the time, but this was the first time I'd tried to find it. We took a couple false starts, but eventually found the trail and headed up (and up and up). Manev and I topped out around around 6:25pm and then started back down about 6:40pm in order to get down before dark.
The place is unique in Yosemite, in that you can see 5 waterfalls from the same spot (Illilouette Falls, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls).
- Yosemite Falls Hike
Helen, Manev, and I took a short day trip to Yosemite to climb the Yosemite Falls Trail.
- Pinnacles
The Palo Alto YMCA arranged a hike down to the Pinnacles and Helen invited us Atheros Hiking Club members to join in as guests. The total group size was about 16, but a series of miscommunications meant that we were down to 9 for most of the hike. Helen, Peilan, Arie, and I are from Atheros. Juli is a friend of Helen's from college and Clara, Katie, and Christina are all friends of Juli.
- Mission Peak Poppies
- Santa Teresa County Park
A beautiful day at the park. My first attempt at a few panorama shots. Click on the pictures to see them full-screen.
- Big Basin
The Atheros Hiking Club took advantage of a clear day after a storm and went to check out the waterfalls in Big Basin.
- Kepler
Tim and I and Tim's son Matthew went over to NASA Ames and watched the Kepler launch. Kepler is a telescope that is being launched into a solar orbit to look for planets around nearby stars.
- Sacramento River - Antioch
Some pictures of the Sacramento River near the bridge in Antioch.
- Black Diamond Mines
A quick hike in the rain up to one of the more unique parks in the East Bay. This park up by Antioch was, in the 1860s, the biggest coal mining district in the west. Now, it is mostly just used for cattle grazing and hiking, but there is still a lot of old mining stuff to check out.
- Tour of California
I drove over to Skyline and the walked about a mile down Tunitas Creek Road to watch the race. With the rain and the trees, the photography was pretty challenging, hence the grainy pictures. Most are shot at 1600 ISO and around a 60th of a second at f/5.5 (slow lens; should have borrowed Fred's f/1.8 50mm). :-)
- Sugar Bowl
I went up to Sugar Bowl with a coworker, Maitrey. I made an attempt at a video using his helmet-cam. Enjoy!
There was a lot of powder, but it was a bit heavy. Snowed most of the day.
- Ranji Cup Cricket
The semi-finals for the state cricket league started in Chennai today (it is a 4-day test match). The stadium isn't too far from the hotel (a 15-min walk followed by a 10-min train ride), so I decided to check it out.
Mumbai was playing Saureshstra and the most famous player in India (think Wayne Gretzky), Sachin Tendulkar, was scheduled to play for Mumbai. Alas the players in front of him in the lineup didn't get out, pushing him until tomorrow when I'll be working. Still a bunch of good cricket. All free as well, since even Indians get bored by 4 days of cricket. :-)
- Mahabalipuram
Ryan (from Taiwan) and Samarjeet and Bharath (from Bangalore) had never been down to Mahabalipuram. Since it had been five years since I'd been down, we took a lazy Saturday and checked it out.
The area was an important site around 700AD and most of the stone carvings and buildings are from that era.
(All photos taken with my iPhone camera.)
- Happy New Year!
Houses in South India often put out a small painting on the sidewalk in the morning using rice flour. On New Year's Day, they seemed to have put in extra effort. These are just a few that I walked by on the way into the office. Enjoy!
- Skyline Snow
The snow level dropped to about 1000 ft on Monday night, leaving several inches of snow on the hills surrounding the bay. I took a quick trip up to Monte Bello and Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserves to check it out before it all melted away.
- Yosemite
Pictures from Trip #2 of the Atheros Hiking Club. (Photoshop actions are in parenthesis for each picture, just for reference.)
- Blue Angels
- Yosemite High Country
All pictures taken with the iPhone camera.
- Half Dome
We made it! Well, 9 people (not including me) made it to the top. A bunch of us made it to the base of the cables. A great day. A great group. A great trip.
- Montara Mountain
- Mission Peak - 08/11/08
Tim and I took a quick evening trip up and down and caught a bit of the Leonids Meteor Shower.
- Mission Peak - 08/09/08
I couldn't make the 4pm hike up to Black Mountain, so I took a quick hike up Mission Peak starting around 7pm.

- Muir Woods
Anna and Kevin, Helen, and I took a short trip to Muir Woods that turned into a long hike back and forth to Stinson Beach. Beautiful day.
- Mysore
Prem and I went on a quick trip up to Mysore on my last weekend in India. The first picture is of the cathedral in Mysore, modeled after the one in Cologne, Germany. The remaining shots are from a very cool bird sanctuary near Mysore.
- Kabini
Prem, Aaditya and his wife, and I went on a weekend trip up to Kabini, a resort area next to the Nagerhole and Bandipur National Parks. In addition to just relaxing, we went on a couple of safaris, one by car and one by boat, and explored the area a bit.
- Bangalore Office
- Shanghai/Taiwan/Singapore
All pictures taken with my iPhone camera.
- Hong Kong
Prem, Arun, and I stopped in Hong Kong for a short break before heading to Taiwan. On Easter Sunday we visited two Buddhist temples, one in Kowloon and the one with the big Buddha near the airport.
- Tahoe
After an epic drive up on Friday night (almost exactly 12 hours, including 2 separate 3 hour road closures), I got in a half day at Squaw on Saturday afternoon and half day at Diamond Peak on Sunday morning. Great conditions at Squaw, great views at Diamond Peak.
- Sierra at Tahoe

- New Mexico Flight
Some pictures in New Mexico and on the flight home through Bryce Canyon.
- Kings Canyon
I headed up to Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon on Saturday. It was raining off and on on, but I went on a flat hike of about 7 miles around the valley floor anyway. Because of the weather, I just brought the iPhone instead of the good camera, though it actually worked pretty good. Sunday was nice enough to take the good camera and I went on another 8-9 mile hike, this time up Bubb's Creek to get some good views back down the canyon. I stopped at Grant Grove on the way back, just to break up the drive, and I'm really glad I did. It is quite spectacular.
- Santa Theresa County Park
I took a short trip south on light rail to check out the only real hiking you can do in the area without driving.
- Picnic Table
Ta da!
- Stanford UCLA
Even though Stanford sucks only slightly less than last year, I figured a nice Saturday afternoon would be a perfect time to check out the new stadium. Unfortunately, the cheap tickets available on StubHub were all in the UCLA section.
- New House
Here it is! It was built in the 1880s and has been almost completely renovated.
- Shanghai Xujiahui
Cool! I finally found an urban part of Shanghai that feels like the locals actually shop here. It is still upscale and western and all that, but it doesn't have the tourist vibe of Nanjing Road or the corporate vibe of Pudong. I was actually here for a couple hours and not one person tried to sell me a watch! :-)
- Shanghai Wandering
I took a lazy Sunday stroll around Pudong, Nanjing Road, and Hangshen Road.
- Shanghai Tech Museum
Today was insanely hot and humid, so I spent a few hours inside the Shanghai Tech Museum. Mostly the normal tech museum stuff, though they did a pretty good job. Cirque du Soleil is starting up a several month run next week. Their tent is in the Tech Museum parking lot.
- Hangzhou
Prem and I took a side trip down to Hangzhou for the weekend. A wonderful father-daughter pair acted as our driver and tour guide.
- Shanghai
These are all taken in the high-tech park near my hotel and the Atheros office. There is a museum and sculpture garden in the park and I've included some shots of the more interesting/fun sculptures.

- Mexico
These are a few pictures I took on my recent Thanksgiving trip to Mexico. The first three sections are of different parts of Mexico City I visited during my first weekend. I then spent about a week in Bacalar visiting friends. While there, we visited two Mayan ruins: Kohunlich, nearby in the Yucatan, and Tikal, in Guatemala. The last 5 sections are seperated by different types of animals and plants.
(Slideshow Music: Three Point Two, Hot Buttered Rum String Band, In These Parts)
- Catalina
These are pictures from a trip I took down to Catalina Island. I started at Two Harbors, the smaller resort on the north end of the Island. I then backpacked about 7 miles to Parson's Landing, very close to the tip, where I camped on the beach. The next day I hiked back along the top of the ridge.
I'd definately recommend the trip to anyone. If you sail, you must visit here at some point. It is about the perfect place to cruise around in a sailboat.

- Briones Regional Park - Diablo View Trail
I took advantage of a short break in the clouds to explore the northern end of Briones Regional Park.
I accidently left the camera set to 1600 ISO, which left most of the pictures too noisy to be used. The few pictures below are almost OK after extensive post processing.
